Cited vs seen: planning B2B search for 2027 now that ChatGPT sells ads

The answer box now has a billboard next to it.

On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced a visual ad format for ChatGPT, beginning with a test group of U.S. advertisers this month, along with new conversion and attribution integrations with third-party measurement firms. OpenAI's position is plain: advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

Take that at its word, because it sharpens the plan rather than softening it. The answer stays earned. The space beside it is for sale. Two lanes, the way search split into organic and paid twenty years ago.

Separation makes earned citations worth more, not less

If ads cannot buy a place in the answer, then the shortlist a model writes for a B2B buyer is decided somewhere money cannot reach directly. An ad can rent a buyer's attention. It cannot put your name on the list the model assembles. That list is built from what the rest of the web says about you.

Writing in Search Engine Land, Kevin Indig cites AirOps research that third-party signals drive 85 percent of brand visibility in large language models. The companies the models recommend are the companies the web already vouches for.

You cannot plan for one assistant and assume the rest

Indig also cites Growth Memo data showing that 91 percent of citations appear on only one of ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews. Visibility does not transfer across assistants the way a top organic ranking once carried everywhere. Being the cited source on one surface tells you almost nothing about the other two. A plan that optimizes for a single assistant is a plan with two blind spots.

The work that actually drives citations

Citations come from off-site authority, and that is slower and less glamorous than a campaign. It is original research and data others want to reference. It is presence on the review and analyst platforms that buyers and models both read. It is partner and community content that puts your name in credible company. None of it is bought in a quarter, which is exactly why it compounds.

Measure in three layers

  • Exposure: where you are cited and mentioned, and by whom, across each assistant.
  • Behavior: branded search and direct visits that follow when the model names you.
  • Outcomes: the pipeline that traces back to those moments.

Attribution will be imperfect, and the plans that wait for perfect attribution will wait past the window.

Where paid placement fits

Ads amplify a reputation. They do not build one. Once a citation base exists and specific pages are proven, paid placement can push those pages harder. In sensitive categories, healthcare among them, check the platform's ad policies before any test, because the rules there move faster than the ad products do.

The question for your 2027 plan

Do not open the plan with a ChatGPT ad budget. Open it with three questions. Where are we cited, by whom, and on which assistant? Then decide what share of the budget goes to being cited, and what share to being seen.
