Be the source of record: designing pages for Google's official-source slot

Google is adding more links to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It still will not tell you whether anyone clicks them.
On October 15, 2026, Google announced inline links inside AI answers, article carousels for more queries, and a new section at the top of some answers that surfaces official sites when only a few exist for a task. As Search Engine Land noted, Search Console still provides no click data for AI features.
So stop chasing the click, and start competing for the official slot.
What Google showed, and what it withheld
The links and carousels are incremental. The new official-source section is the signal worth reading. It is Google saying, in public, that for certain tasks it wants to point people to the source of record rather than to a roundup or an aggregator. It showed you where the current now runs. It did not give you a meter to count the fish, because there is still no click data for these features.
Why healthcare and B2B sit in that zone
An official-source slot appears where a task has one right answer and few credible places to get it. That is the shape of the questions health systems and B2B firms field every day. How do I prepare for this procedure. What will this cost. How does this vendor handle HIPAA. Those are not blog topics. They are canonical answers, and Google is now looking for a canonical page to attach them to.
Take a source-of-record inventory
List the ten pages on your site that should be the canonical answer to a real buyer or patient question. For a health system, that is your preparation instructions, your price estimator, your accessibility statement. For a B2B firm, it is your security page and your product documentation, not your blog roundup. If a page that should be authoritative is thin, buried, or out of date, that is the work.
What an official-source page looks like
- One job per page, stated plainly, with the answer near the top rather than below a story.
- Accurate structured data that matches what the page actually says.
- Plain-language content that meets WCAG, because an answer an AI has to guess at is one it can pass over.
- Nothing stale: a price, a prep step, or a security claim that is wrong in an AI answer is a liability, not just a ranking miss.
Measure without click data
Since the features report no clicks, measure AI visibility the way the rest of it is measured: whether you are cited for the questions that matter, whether branded and direct demand is rising on those canonical pages, and whether conversions follow. Accuracy is part of this. In an AI answer, a wrong number does not just cost a click, it travels.
Fish hold where the current delivers food. Google just showed you where the current runs now. Decide which page on your site should be the official answer, and get it ready before someone else holds that spot.
