Fighting marine piracy with AI, Machine Vision, and UX Design

Overview
Marine piracy, including illegal fishing, human and weapons trafficking, pollution, and other harmful illegal activities, poses a significant global challenge. In response to this, the Salesforce Foundation, United Nations Oceans Council, and Interpol commissioned Agency 39A to develop a solution combining machine learning, machine vision, and image recognition. The goal was to create a tool capable of recognizing almost any vessel worldwide and efficient enough to operate on a mobile device. The result: Mazu, an application that connects these advanced technologies while putting power in the hands of ship captains, Interpol, and global policing organizations. The project leveraged Machine Learning, UX design, UI design, Design Research, Service Design, iOS Application Development, Rapid Prototyping, and Project Management methodologies.

Challenges
The task involved combating a wide range of illegal activities at sea, which required a solution that could identify and track almost any vessel globally. The solution also needed to be accessible and user-friendly for a broad range of personas, from global law enforcement agencies to local fishermen.
Solutions
The approach combined the power of MetaMind AI, Salesforce CRM, Mapbox, and a user experience developed for diverse user personas. Collaboration with Salesforce engineers, Interpol officials, government officials, and end users led to the creation of an experience designed to identify, report, and protect. The result was Mazu, an app accessible across various common devices, extending beyond the reach of current policing tools. Mazu integrated sophisticated image recognition and vessel tracking technology into a well-designed user experience, effectively putting a crime-stopping tool into the hands of anyone with a smartphone.
Results
Mazu received recognition at the United Nations Oceans Council, the Interpol Assembly on Ocean Safety, and was a finalist in the xPrize Big Oceans Challenge. The app has significantly contributed to the prevention of marine piracy by empowering individuals with the ability to identify and report suspicious activities at sea.
