Promoting health through prediabetes prevention programs

Healthcare

Overview

The American Medical Association (AMA) aimed to develop a framework to promote a healthier nation by identifying more patients with prediabetes to prevent or delay new cases of Type 2 Diabetes. This was in response to the high medical expenses and the devastating health repercussions associated with diabetes.

Challenges

People diagnosed with diabetes incur on average $16,750 annually in medical expenses, which is about 2.3 times the medical expenses of a person without diabetes. The challenge was to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and its associated costs. The AMA sought to increase clinical screening rates and referrals of prediabetes patients to CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs.

Solutions

A collaborative approach involving key stakeholders was adopted, resulting in a digital transformation strategy. This included UX and UI design, content development, CMS design and development, as well as promotion and awareness activities. The solution also involved calculating the benefits, cost savings, and ROI of program enrollment and completion, making it easier to understand the data.

Results

The implemented solutions led to increased clinical screening rates and prediabetes-patient referrals to CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs. Research shows that program participants who lost 5-7% of their body weight and added 150 minutes of exercise per week cut their risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes by up to 58% (71% for people over 60 years old). Furthermore, program participants were one-third less likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes than individuals who did not join a program. The program benefits included reversing prediabetes and lowering the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
