Removing 4,000,000 pounds of atmospheric carbon with an app
Agency 39A designed and developed Exelon’s EcoCRED, a mobile application that calculates and suggests practical methods for reducing their carbon footprint. EcoCRED facilitated the removal of over 4,000,000 pounds of carbon from the atmosphere in year one. This initiative successfully engaged individuals and businesses in sustainable practices, strengthening Exelon's positive environmental impact and brand perception.

Key Performance Indicators
Challenges:
The concept of carbon footprints and offsets can be difficult to grasp, leading to apathy or confusion around personal impact on climate issues. Exelon wanted to launch a new platform that would engage individuals and climate-positive businesses in a carbon offset marketplace while building a brand distinct from its core identity. They needed a strategy that combined education, behavioral science, and technology—along with iOS and Android apps, a digital product strategy, and a scalable brand.
Solutions:
Agency 39A led the end-to-end incubation of EcoCRED—from concept through launch. Using design sprints, stakeholder interviews, and UX research, the team identified core behaviors, validated features with real users, and iterated with live data. The platform was architected and built for mobile-first deployment, with fully native iOS and Android apps. A unique brand identity, award system, and product strategy were developed in parallel, including marketplace integration and habit-tracking gamification. Prototypes, wireframes, and technical infrastructure were all tailored to drive both engagement and measurable emissions reduction.

Results
EcoCRED launched successfully in both app stores, quickly amassing over 60,000 users. Together, the community has reduced more than 4 million pounds of carbon emissions through sustainable behaviors and offset purchases. The platform cultivated a loyal, mission-aligned user base and positioned Exelon as an innovator in climate-positive digital products. The brand, design, and technology stack continue to support new features and audience expansion.
